Hello friends. Perhaps some of you have heard that Ms. Rachel's father has been ill and in the hospital. Ms. Rachel shared that information with our students recently, and many children drew pictures for him.
Sadly, Rev. Struckmann died Friday evening. Ms. Rachel has not been in school, and will not be in the for the rest of the week. Today, we told the children about his passing, since so many have been asking where Ms. Rachel has been. It was a short conversation. We emphasized that Rev. Struckmann lived a very long life, which he devoted to God, and he's in heaven with Him now. Then we said a prayer for comfort for Ms. Rachel and her family. I am writing to you so that you are not surprised with questions or comments from your children. As always, thank you for your support!

Brrrr! January is an excellent time of year for hot soup and a good story! This month, the Montessori Children's House read several versions of the old tale of Stone Soup. From these stories, we were able to compare and contrast elements such as characters, setting, and plot (as well as learning that new vocabulary). Then, as a community, we made our own stone soup. Each family contributed one ingredient, and the students all had a hand in adding their part to the soup. Of course, we started with the stone (well-washed by Ms. Teresa) and some water, which is how every story we read began! And then the children chopped vegetables, poured broth, and seasoned. After the soup simmered in the slow cooker for one whole day, we got to taste the results. Most were eager to try the soup they helped make. Many even had seconds! We also collaborated as a group to recall every single ingredient that went into the soup. A big THANK YOU to all who shared a bit to help us make this lesson happen! When everyone gives a little, we all get a lot! On another note, please join us and invite others to join us for Open House this Sunday, January 26, from 12:15 to 2 pm. Come explore the room, and learn how St. Mary's Montessori Children's House gives a solid educational, emotional, and religious foundation to our youngest learners. This event kicks off Catholic Schools' Week, which will be 5 days packed with fun events for all students and families. We recently sent home a schedule to keep you apprised of our Guest Lunch Day, Class Color Day, Pajama Day, and other special activities. Thank you for your continued support! Hello again from the Montessori Children's House! We hope you had a wonderful break over the holidays!
January is Earth Science month. We will explore land and water forms, rocks and minerals, magnets, and volcanoes. Our language unit will be about the various stories called "Stone Soup." Using the different versions of this old tale, we will learn about characters, setting, and plot. At the end of the month, everyone will be asked to contribute something to make our own Stone Soup! This month, we also prepare for all the fun activities of Catholic Schools' Week. A schedule will be sent home for all the special events. Please be aware that for space considerations, we ask that each student bring one guest for their guest lunch day on Monday, January 27. On Sunday, January 26, Open House will be held from 12:15 - 200 pm. Please join us, especially if you are interested in Pre-K or Montessori Kindergarten classes! If you know anyone who might be interested in a quality Catholic education, whether Montessori or traditional, please invite them along. |
