This week, the Montessori room is celebrating Earth Day. We are talking about ways to keep our earth clean and safe for all of its inhabitants. One simple way is to not litter, and another way is to recycle things that can be recycled, to avoid them ending up in a landfill. On Monday, April 18, we started making recycled paper. Using paper scraps from the recycling bin, each and every Montessori student is making their own piece of recycled paper. Our Paper Recycling Factory is structured in an assembly-line fashion, and each child follows 8 labeled steps to turn old paper into new. The children learned that paper pulp in water needs a mold to hold it together until we can squeeze the water out. Pouring the pulp into a can, we had paper circles. We also discovered that the recycled paper took on a mixture of the colors of the paper scraps. We will continue to learn about animal groups this month (reptile, amphibian, insect, mammal, fish, and bird). There's so much interesting vocabulary with these lessons, such as warm- and cold-blooded, vertebrate, and exoskeleton. Next month, we will begin learning about plants and seeds. It's gardening season!
