Happy School Year! And thank you for being part of the inaugural year of the Montessori Children's House at St. Mary's School Swormville!
I, Miss Krista, and Miss Kelli have been busy getting to know students, as they learn and internalize the rules and routines of a Montessori environment. Children are learning how to take out lessons, choose an appropriate workspace, and when completed, put it away ready for the next person to use. They are beginning to understand that when someone is using work, it is not available to anyone else, and thus they are practicing patience and respect for peers. Your preschool and Kindergarten child might seem more tired, while being short on details about what he or she does at school. This is normal. The work of learning new things takes energy, and your child is expending lots of energy adjusting to a new environment while attempting to regulate their own emotions about so much change. It is not that your young one is not "doing anything" but that he or she is learning how to be ready for academics, through exercising patience, attention, and self-motivation. As the entire St. Mary's School community is learning this September about the virtue of the willingness and ability to work, the Montessori class is reflecting on the same virtue. Students are learning that it is up to them to choose work, to keep busy and productive. We want them to make their own choices, especially at first, so the work they do has meaning to them, and keeps their attention more fully. Refer to our home page for more information on the areas of the classroom.
