This summer, for four weeks, Miss Krista and I will be running a Montessori Summer Adventure program! Open to children 3-7 years old, it is a morning program, from 9 am - 12 noon. Children do not have to have Montessori experience.
This Summer Adventure is a unique opportunity to explore a Montessori classroom. Our daily schedule will include introductory Montessori lessons, but each week will focus on a specific summery theme! June 26th - June 30th: FOOD FROM AROUND THE WORLD!!! July 3rd - July 7th: ANIMALS, ANIMALS, ANIMALS July 31st - August 4th: HANDS-IN WATER SCIENCE August 7th - August 11th: KIDSCIENCE WITH EVERYDAY MATERIALS FOOD FROM AROUND THE WORLD- We will be exploring food from three different continents using maps to pinpoint exact countries in which the food is prepared and throughout the week sampling each type of food. We will also have food prep for the children to prepare and serve to each other. ANIMALS, ANIMALS, ANIMALS- During this week, we will be exploring three different animals and their habitats, diets and how to care for them. The children will have opportunities to pet, brush and learn how to care for each animal throughout the week. HANDS-IN WATER SCIENCE - Summer is the perfect time to learn about water! While learning about all states of matter, we will quickly focus in on the different properties of water. Why do some things sink and others float? Is there you can make water travel up? What is happening when something wet dries all by itself? KIDSCIENCE WITH EVERYDAY MATERIALS - This week is a time to explore with common household materials to recreate some cool experiments. We’ll go on an archeology dig in ice, make our own lava lamps, and find out how to make (and use) a solar oven! * * * DAILY ACTIVITIES FOR EACH ADVENTURE INCLUDE - Outdoor playground, gardening, water play, self-served snack, and introduction to Montessori lessons. Montessori Summer Adventure Fees: $120.00 - Weekly tuition cost per camp $25.00 - Registration fee per camp (due with registration form) Tuition due by April 1, 2017.

The Montessori Class is reading and discussing several versions of the old tale, "Stone Soup." It is a story of cooperation and sharing. In that spirit, I invite all of our families to contribute a little something toward a classroom cooking project. I will provide the "magic" stone and the crockpot. Every family has received an e-mail with a Sign-up Genius link to volunteer ingredients. Please sign up for only one ingredient, and for the quantity asked. You may have some or most of these things in your kitchen right now! Please bring ingredients by Wednesday, January 25, so that we can prepare the soup, give it time to simmer, and enjoy it on Thursday, January 26. Bring what you’ve got. Put it in the pot. Every bit counts, from the largest to the least. Together we can celebrate a Stone Soup feast! From “Stone Soup” Retold by Heather Forest Illustrated by Susan Gaber We hope everyone had a restful and joyful holiday break. Now that we are back to school, in a new year, we have so much more to learn. This past week, Miss Rachel has taught us much about Martin Luther King, Jr., a great man of peace and justice. In our life sciences area, we are adding reptiles to our growing list of animals that we are learning to classify. In our physical science area, we will explore rocks, minerals, magnets, and land forms. In our language area, we will read several versions of the story "Stone Soup", and compare the elements of each story - characters, setting, plot, and theme. Towards the end of the month, we'll make a delicious pot of Stone Soup, where each family will be asked to contribute just one small ingredient. This story has the important lesson that when we all give even a little, we can create something great together.
Thank you to everyone who sends in their children dressed appropriately for the weather. We will not go outside when it is bitter cold, but we are always on the lookout for a nice enough day to play in the snow! Speaking of clothes, please make sure your child's set of extra clothes are of the correct size and appropriate for the time of year. A child's extra clothes from September may include shorts, and be too small. As always, labeling of all clothes, even with initials, is much appreciated. Next month, Valentine's Day will prompt discussions of friendship. Presidents' Day will be the impetus to talk about all of our previous Presidents, as well as learn about money. Additionally, we will introduce the children to amphibians in our life sciences area. |
