What a busy time of year. The beautiful sun and blue sky is calling us outside, while we enter the home stretch of events for the end of the school year. We are taking advantage of the summery weather by gardening, holding special events outside (like our ice cream sundae bar sponsored by the Mineo family), and of course, visiting the playground as much as possible! This next Friday, June 1, is our Spring Concert. It begins at 7 pm, and contrary to what was previously announced, will take place in the church. Please bring your child to the Montessori classroom by 6:40 pm, and then you may find seats in the church. After our class's performance, we will go to the foyer of the church, where parents can pick up their children and either go home or back into the church to watch the rest of the concert. The children have worked so hard with Mr. D for weeks on our song! The next Friday, June 8, we will have our End of the Year Celebration. Weather permitting, we will picnic outside. I will let everyone know the minute we have the Sign-Up Genius on the school's website. We ask all families to sign up to provide either food, beverages, paper products, picnic blankets, etc. The Celebration will begin with a song at 10:00 am, and then we will eat. It is a noon dismissal for full day students, so feel free to take your child when you leave, but of course, the bus will be available for bus-riding students to take home. The Friday after that, is the last day of class for the Montessori students. We will attend church as a class, and watch our Kindergarten students' graduation. We realize that not every Kindergartener is moving on to first grade, but every Montessori Kindergartener is invited to participate in graduation. Of course, in the end it is up to each family. June 15 is a full school day. Since we have an End of the Year Celebration on June 8, we will not have a reception after the graduation ceremony. On Tuesday, June 19, the School Picnic will be held. It is a day of multi-age games ending with a picnic lunch. Kindergarten Montessori students only are invited back for the day of the picnic. Bus transportation is available for this noon dismissal day. Children will be grouped with other students from different grades, led by two teachers for each group. It's a fun, action-packed day!

First, the Montessori class would like to thank all the Moms and Grandmas and Aunts who joined us for our Mother's Day Tea on May 11. Our students worked so hard at learning their songs and poem, making gifts, and also chopping up all that fruit for the fruit salad!
This month, we are exploring plants and seeds. This week, in particular, we are learning about the parts of plants we eat. On Monday, we learned that we eat the root of the carrot plant; yesterday, we ate the leaves of the spinach plant. For the rest of the week, we will eat common vegetables that are stems, seeds, and even flowers. We are also finding out what it takes to make seeds grow into plants. Each child is sprouting corn seeds in ziploc bags, so that they can see what happens and how the seed changes. If all goes well, we will plant the sprouted seeds in our garden. It is also the time of year to transplant the sprouts from our decomposed pumpkin into the garden. With any luck, we will grow more corn and pumpkins, and thus the circle of life will continue. The next two events for our class are the Spring Concert on June 1, 7 pm, and our End of the Year Picnic on June 8, 10 am. Please mark your calendars for both events. For the Spring Concert, please bring your child to the Montessori classroom by 6:40 pm on June 1. You may then find a seat in the gymnasium. Our class will be among the first performers, after which we will return to the classroom. You may pick them up from the Montessori, classroom. We are doing this because we realize that it is close to bedtime for some of our students, and staying for the whole concert may be too difficult. Tomorrow, Thursday, our class will enjoy an Ice Cream Sundae Bar, courtesy of the Mineo family! This will be a morning event (hooray for an ice cream brunch!), as the Mineo family had the winning bid at the Spring Auction. Hopefully, we will eat picnic-style, in the fresh air and sunshine. Last Tuesday, our much-anticipated chicks began to hatch. We were lucky enough to witness the first hatchling, and catch it on video. What a wondrous miracle for the children to witness! Five out of seven of the eggs hatched over the course of three days. On Friday, May 11, we will co-host a Mother's Day Tea in the cafeteria with the Kindergarten class. We will begin after Mass. Both classes will attend Mass at 9 am and sit with their own classes. When Mass ends, shortly before 10 am, we will go directly to the cafeteria for food, gifts, and celebration. Please make every effort to meet your child in the cafeteria by 10 am. We ask that students wear their Sunday best for Mass. Additionally, it will be a noon dismissal, so there will be no lunch or rest for full day students. For the month of May, the Montessori class is learning about seeds and plants. We will sprout seeds, plant some in our community garden, and learn about the parts of plants, especially the vegetables and fruits that we eat. Tonight is Open House, from 7-8:30 pm. If you know someone who is looking for quality Catholic K-8 education, please invite them to come tour St. Mary's. Finally, May's Service Project is collecting t-shirts for the needy in Nicaragua. Please consider donating gently used t-shirts, any sizes, for this important cause. |
