Hello, all! It's hard to believe, but the end of our school year is close! And what a year it's been! While we know that almost everyone has been dealing with a topsy-turvy world of suddenly working and/or teaching at home, we are trying to provide at least some comparable experiences to how our days would be in the classroom in June.
Our official last day of school is Friday, June 19. However, just like if we were in the classroom, we will ease up on the rigors of lessons before that. Usually, we would be taking the children outside more frequently, practicing our end-of-the-year song, and beginning to involve the students in cleaning and putting away materials in the room. So, regular math, language, and science lessons will end on Friday June 12. From June 15-19 , we will have morning announcements, and keep counting the days of school, but not assign journal topics, nor give lessons. There will be some interesting and fun online activities and games offered. On Wednesday June 10, Ms. Krista, Ms. Rachel, and I will deliver yard signs to our Montessori Kindergarteners. Instead of a Graduation ceremony, this sign will commemorate their year. And, of course, they have been practicing the song, "I Am a Promise." Instructions will come soon to help families record their Kindergartener singing, so there will be an online "performance." Kindergarten graduation photos and diplomas will be sent home as soon as they arrive to school. Instead of celebrating with an end-of-year potluck picnic, we will send a slideshow of memories set to music for all of our class families, also sent online. Report cards will be emailed on or before June 19. This trimester, of course, we are not able to sit down with children and assess their skills. Accordingly, many skill levels will remain unchanged from the last trimester. However, what will be reflected in the report card is any new lesson topics that have been introduced through distance learning. As the whole school is doing, we are assessing students according to a pass/fail model, based on their skill levels from March, and discussions, if needed, with parents about their progress at home. This Friday, June 12, there will be no Montessori Zoom Reunion, due to a scheduling conflict with an 8th Grade Event in which all teachers participate. Therefore, our last Zoom Reunion will be on Friday, June 19. A Moving-Up Day is planned on June 18 for Montessori students who are going to First Grade. When we have the full schedule and plan, we will send it to you. On June 23, there will be a drive-through for families to bring back Chromebooks and books that were sent home for distance learning. There will be more information about this forthcoming from the school. As always, and now more than ever, if you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please reach out to the Montessori teachers. You can reach us via the Remind App, email, or phone (See Contact Info & Schedules page on this website). Thank you for all you've done, and continue to do. Thank you for being part of our St. Mary's Family!
