We hope everyone had a restful and joyful holiday break. Now that we are back to school, in a new year, we have so much more to learn. This past week, Miss Rachel has taught us much about Martin Luther King, Jr., a great man of peace and justice. In our life sciences area, we are adding reptiles to our growing list of animals that we are learning to classify. In our physical science area, we will explore rocks, minerals, magnets, and land forms. In our language area, we will read several versions of the story "Stone Soup", and compare the elements of each story - characters, setting, plot, and theme. Towards the end of the month, we'll make a delicious pot of Stone Soup, where each family will be asked to contribute just one small ingredient. This story has the important lesson that when we all give even a little, we can create something great together.
Thank you to everyone who sends in their children dressed appropriately for the weather. We will not go outside when it is bitter cold, but we are always on the lookout for a nice enough day to play in the snow! Speaking of clothes, please make sure your child's set of extra clothes are of the correct size and appropriate for the time of year. A child's extra clothes from September may include shorts, and be too small. As always, labeling of all clothes, even with initials, is much appreciated. Next month, Valentine's Day will prompt discussions of friendship. Presidents' Day will be the impetus to talk about all of our previous Presidents, as well as learn about money. Additionally, we will introduce the children to amphibians in our life sciences area.
