Well, Catholic Schools' Week was cut a bit short due to a snowstorm and freezing temperatures, but this week we came back with renewed energy and love for school! We said hello to February at our morning circles, and introduced our new classroom themes - Presidents and money.
We are learning about Presidents because of Presidents' Day (February 18), and we are learning about money because Presidents adorn most of our coins and bills. Our nomenclature this month focuses on George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy, the faces we see most often on our money. Of course, we also have several Valentine crafts on our art shelves. We will celebrate Valentine's Day on February 14 with exchanging cards. There will not be a Valentine's party; during the course of the morning work period, students may deliver their Valentines to others' decorated bags. We ask that you send in enough Valentines for each student (we have 32 in the class), but please do not address them. Delivering 32 personally addressed Valentines would simply be too long a process. However, signing each one is a fantastic way for your child to practice writing his or her name! This week, we also enjoyed a wonderful activity designed by Miss Rachel. For "Game Day" during Catholic Schools' Week, Miss Rachel wanted to have a Montessori game show for our students! Since we were snowed in and frozen out on the original date, she presented her game show this week! Questions were pulled from topics we had learned about so far this year. Each full-day child got a turn in the "hot seat," but could ask teammates for help if they were stumped. We practiced encouragement of our own teams and good sportsmanship toward the opposing team! As the host, Miss Rachel asked the questions, awarded points, and displayed the prizes for the winners. No one expected that there would be a tie! Here are some photos:
