We said goodbye to October, and hello to November! With a new month comes new themes, new virtues to learn as a school, and new weather.
In the past month, we learned about leaves, since so many were falling around us. We found many different kinds of various sizes, shapes, and colors. We also discovered that after putting our collection into a basket, the leaves all turned crunchy, fragile, and brown. The leaves were not the only gifts from nature we enjoyed. Callum Lucey’s family sent in a wasp’s nest, so we learned how wasps make their own paper to build their homes. Colton Habermann’s family shared birds’ nests made with grasses, string, and horse hair. The nests still had egg fragments in it. These structures remind us that animals of all kinds need homes, and that they have to work together to build them. Thank you for sharing! This month, our attention is turning to how animals prepare for the coming winter (and it is coming, despite the recent heat wave). Hibernation and migration are two ways that animals cope with the cold and lack of food that winter brings to our region. We are also investigating winter squashes. I will introduce the class to five different kinds of squash, they will be able to handle and compare them, and we will eventually cut them, cook them, and taste them. Every day, we say a prayer of thanks at morning circle, and sing a prayer for lunch. This month, we will focus on gratitude in even more depth, as it is the virtue for November. Children will be encouraged to express appreciation for what they have. We will learn to share our good fortune by partnering up with Miss Sanderson’s First Grade class to donate food to those in need. Please send in boxed and canned nonperishable food, which will be collected at a table outside the office throughout this month. To reinforce the lesson, our class will read the classic tale, “Stone Soup.” Also, a special thanks to April Lucey for volunteering as our Montessori Room Mother. If you haven’t done so, please send in the slip with your e-mail so that she can coordinate all important school and class information and send it directly to you.
